An underexposed, thus enhanced crop, helps to identify the species.
The European Garden Spider (Cross Spider) starts off emerging from a hidden cocoon in late spring. I often watched a bulk of little yellow spiders (~2mm) with a black dot on the abdomen, clutching together in a sphere in the bushes or flowers. When disturbed, they spread off in every direction but in a couple of minutes you find the spider sphere again. Sometimes you can even find connection wires from every spider to an abandoned cocoon — theirs, obviously.
About 1-2 months later you find them everywhere in your garden.
This specimen, taking it’s well deserved meal, is about 2 months, 3.5 to 4mm in body size.
You can find the typical spots on it’s back already, identifiying it as araneus diadematus.

In fact he’s a brat and his only contribution to the wealth of mankind seems to be causing his father’s alopecia… sometimes.
And then there are these special moments he makes me so proud I could barely express, but this time I had my camera prepared :-)
