Topic: Geotag RAW on Windows

wrote Posted 10 months, 2 weeks ago
Hi,

I'm looking for a free geotagging program for Windows that can handle both RAW and use Google Earth for the tagging. Haven't found any program that can do both things, only one of them. They either only geotag jpg or they're limited to tag from GPS traces. I need a program that I can use for those occasions when I don't use my GPS. Robogeo fulfills my needs, but it's $40.

Have you tried Picasa? I know it can handle RAW images and geotags in Google earth. I'm not sure it can geotag RAW images but it's worth a try.

I was going to recommend Picasa with Google Earth as well. It will in fact tag RAW (my files are NEF/Nikon RAW). It's pretty fast and easy to tag with, it puts a crosshair in the window, you just zoom into the location, click, then drag the map to the next location and click for the next photo, etc.

The one thing to remember to do is to put a batch of photos into your Picasa tray, then hit the Geotag button, otherwise you only carry one photo over at a time...I have made that mistake a few times ;-)

Thanks for the suggestions. I tried Picasa, but I don't know to write the location into the EXIF-data. Currently, the location is only stored in Picasa ini-file in the directory.

Btw, when trying out the demo of Robogeo I discovered that when writing the location to EXIF, all ITPC-data are removed, making it useless for all photos with added meta-data. The EXIF-data is preserved though.

I think it does write it to the exif data...certainly for jpegs. When I upload them to Zooomr, it picks up the geotags.

I geotagged a DNG-photo and then exported it to a jpg. Uploaded the jpg to both Zooomr and Flickr, but the location wasn't picked up on neither site. I store all my photos in RAW, so I'd like to tag them before I export to jpg.

Same thing here...maybe it doesn't stick to the RAW files outside of Picasa?

JPG files do stick, maybe you would need to export to JPG first, then geotag?

Seems like I have to settle with tagging the exported jpgs when I don't have a GPS trace.

How about Geosetter - http://tinyurl.com/67vs6z ?
It seems to satisfy your request, although I've never tried to geotag RAW files.

But Geosetter didn't work with Google Earth. Only with Google Maps. But it tags RAW-Files correctly!
